A few months ago Shelterforce published an article called “The Sword and the Shield” about Boston organization City Life/ Vida Urbana. CLVU has had enormous success both on the ground and in the policy level around tenant and homeowner rights during foreclosure. Like UHAB Organizers, rather than fight to prevent foreclosures from taking place, CLVU focuses on post-foreclosure actions. Among CLVU’s victories, they created a system for tenants to buy back foreclosed homes for an affordable and sustainable price. We are inspired by this kind of action that uses tenant driven methods to fight housing speculation. CLVU has also successfully established a Bank Tenant Association which connects any and everyone who has had a history with foreclosure to work in solidarity against bad bank practices. It’s exciting to look to other methods of innovative organizing that creates lasting impact and ignites tenants!
